German shepherd: The popular dog breed! German shepherd or Alsatian as they are commonly known is a very popular dog breed. These dogs are often used as guard dogs, military dogs, rescue and search dogs and police dogs. They are used for these services because this breed of dogs can be trained easily in obedience and protection. They will do anything to make their owners happy.

These are big, strong dogs with long tails. There coat may have either short or long hair. The color of the coat varies quite a lot. The most common colors are brown and tan however you may also get white or black colored German shepherds. These dogs also have erect ears.

These dogs were actually discovered by Captain Max von Stephanitz in 1800s (in the later parts). These dogs became popular pets when they were brought home by British and American soldiers after the First World War.

There are many different varieties of the Alsatian and they all have peculiar looks, skills and behavior. The North American breed of German shepherds is bred especially for its unique looks. In fact they have a more inclined back as compared to the normal German shepherd. This may cause them a lot of problems. Their behavior is also very different from the other lines of the German shepherds. The international working line of German Shepherds is bred as "working dogs". These are strong dogs. They are also bred for their appearance.

German shepherds by nature are very obedient and loyal towards their masters. They can be trained to become excellent attacking dogs. This is because they have very strong jaws and teeth. However the problem with these dogs is that they may turn fearful or aggressive in case they are not trained rightly. Due to this, these dogs may also end up in puppy mills. People consider these dogs to be extremely dangerous, that's because they are often used as police and attack dogs. However German shepherds are the ideal family pets.

These loyal dogs can also be quite emotional. These dogs can also be used as guide dogs but they are not used much in this field since they are prone to develop separation trauma and anxiety. German shepherds vary quite a lot in their behavior. "Working dogs" are more energetic. They are also more intelligent and dutiful. They may become upset if they don't get the required amount of exercise. They are commonly used as rescue dogs because they love to do some sort of work. The North American breed of German shepherds can be your perfect companion.

These dogs may suffer from hip dysplasia and elbow problems owing to their huge size. They can also have von Willebrand's disease or skill allergies. On an average, these dogs survive for 12 years.

This breed of dog can do a number of things. These intelligent dogs will do almost anything to make their masters happy. That's precisely the reason as to why German shepherds are the perfect police dogs, rescue dogs and guard dogs. They are also great family pets!
