Chihuahuas are probably the smallest breed of dogs that you will ever see. The American Kennel Club classifies this breed as the member of the Toy Group. They keep well in warm countries and first appeared in Mexico. They are about 5 inches high and weigh one to six pound. They have big, poppy eyes. They have pierced and attentive ears. They come in different colors out of which black and tan are more common. Long haired and short haired are the two varieties of Chihuahuas. They are the perfect companions who hate to be left alone. These dogs are becoming quite popular with celebrities.

They love to play outdoors on warm days. Chihuahuas are perfect for apartment owners since they occupy only a small space. They don't require much exercising though you can train them to utilize a trash box. They also enjoy living in a house which has a large yard.

Chihuahuas must have obedience training since they have a tendency to become self centered. These classes will train your puppy properly and will help in socializing your puppy. These dogs can be badly behaved and hence they must learn the basic obedience. The classes will ensure that your puppy gets along well with other pets and dogs. This is an intelligent breed and some of them can even take agility classes.

These dogs can sometime trouble small kids if they fear that they will be roughly handled. These dogs get spoiled easily. They can get bossy if you are not strict with them. Despite being so small, these dogs can get into a fight with larger dogs. They think that they match the strength and size of Rottweiler. For this reason, they are also wonderful guard dogs. If you have other dogs make sure that your Chihuahua does not bully them.

This breed is very choosy when it comes to food. They eat little though their food can cost you much more than other breeds. This breed is so fragile that it cannot eat dry and hard food. The have no major health problems, though Chihuahuas can develop epilepsy, fractures, dislocated jaws and rheumatism. They can also have dental problems. They don't require much grooming. You can brush them weekly. You can brush your dog's teeth daily in order to avoid any dental problems. Long haired variety of Chihuahua requires more grooming than Short haired ones who require very little care.

So if you desire a small dog who can accompany you wherever you go, then you must buy a Chihuahua. These dogs look very cute and can be your perfect companion. Though small in size they are very strong mentally.
