Bulldog is a very popular family pet. The breed was developed to help the butchers to slaughter the bulls. Few people also used the dog's obstinate nature to convert their own dogs to bull baiters. However this sport was banned and after that people began to breed these dogs. They are very loving and affectionate dogs.

This is a powerful dog which is not too big in size. These dogs are known for their sweet and gentle nature. It is a member of American Kennel Club's Non-Sporting Group. These dogs are twelve to sixteen inches high and weigh forty to fifty pounds. It has a forehead which is flat in shape, a squat body and large droopy jaws. Their tails can be corkscrew or straight. They have a pair of sad, gentle and dark eyes.  Their appearance is a major reason for its popularity.

These dogs are devoted companions and are perfect for apartment life. They enjoy evening walks though they are not very energetic and require very little exercising. The major drawback with them is that they snore, drool, and pass gas frequently which can be quite annoying at times. These dogs are friendly with other dogs but they can bully them if there's food involved.

You should start training them when they are small, because Bulldogs are powerful animals and it would become difficult to handle them once they grow big. These dogs are not great learners so much so that some of them are unable to grasp even the simplest of commands. They learn quickly after they reach the age of six months. Luckily they are always eager to please their masters and this works in their favor.

This breed loves to eat but you must prevent your dog from over eating. It can have some major health problems if it over eats. They are also prone to develop hip dysplasia, breathing problems, allergies and eye problems. You should never use a choke collar for you Bulldog since they are prone to develop breathing problems. They have small tracheas and to prevent it from further damage you can use a harness. These dogs can scorch easily so you need to be careful and keep them out of the sun. Bulldogs have short coats and thus they do not require too much of grooming. However their wrinkles require cautious cleaning or they will develop skin diseases along with a malicious smell. 

So if you live in an apartment and want to have a loving and affectionate companion, then Bulldogs are perfect for you. These dogs are sociable and very friendly animals.
