Beagles are popular hunting dogs. They have been used to hunt for several centuries. In addition to being popular hunting dogs, they also make wonderful family pets. Beagles are a popular breed because they are well mannered and easy to handle. They come in two sizes, under thirteen inches and thirteen to fifteen inches. Both varieties are almost similar except in their size. Its coat is short and it has dark eyes, long tail and droopy ears. The coat mostly comes in a combination of black, white and tan color. Black, orange or tan dogs with white markings are also available. These dogs are quite popular as they are very loving and playful. Beagles love to eat and they eat whatever they get. They love food so much that if you put them on diet, they will eat garbage gladly. They may look in the trashcans in search of an after dinner snack. The Beagle can adapt itself nicely to apartment life though it can irritate your neighbors with strange noises. You must take your dog for long walks because they are hunters and full of energy so they need a way to burn some off that energy. Never leave them alone, they can be very dangerous. A Beagle who is tracking down his prey will forget all his obedience and be very dangerous. They should be allowed to do things as they like. They brood for days if they don't get their own way. You need to tell your children that they should not upset and trouble them without reasons. The Beagles love children and other dogs, but they can cause a lot of trouble to your family cat. They have a keen sense of smell and a strong hunting instinct.
Beagles eat a lot and can hence become over weight and develop diseases related to weight. Though a healthy breed, Beagles can develop epilepsy or heart disease. You should take your dog for regular check ups. This will make sure that your dog stays fit and healthy. It is a member of the American Kennel Club's hound group.
